The Simple Hydraulic Calculator (TSHC) is a specially developed program especially designed to help the novice or the amateur who wants to learn the basics of hydraulic design for their sprinkler system. Its latest version (v1.0) is fully capable of calculating the design of an automatic sprinkler system in accordance with NFPA 13 (2009) and applicable codes.
TSHC is a standalone application which runs independently of any other program or operating system. All that is needed is a DOS computer. We have fully tested the software on all versions of DOS and Windows (from v1.0 to v4.0). However, the software is compatible with any older DOS operating system.
The TSHC has been tested with TSHC for DOS using 2 K, 1.25 G, 5.25 G, 10 G, 20 G and 40 G RAM computer systems.
The TSHC has also been tested for Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and 8 using computers having 2 K, 1.25 G, 5.25 G, 10 G, 20 G and 40 G RAM.
The TSHC does not require any other computer programs.
The TSHC has two versions (v1.0 and v1.5). In short, the difference between the two versions is that the v1.0 has only one digital calculator engine for the Design Hydraulic Calculations and the v1.5 has two engine for the Design and Design Pressure Calculation.
The v1.5 has some more additional functions like design of a Waste Water Pool, design of the Vertical and Horizontal Failures in the Design and Design Pressure Calculation.
In addition, some other functions have been added like Design of Homogeneous Pressure Areas, Design of Nozzles, Design of Spillover in Water Main, Design of the Sub-system Pressure Areas in the Design Pressure Calculation, Design of the Vegetation in the Design Pressure Calculation, Design of the Sub-system Velocity (in the Design Calculations).
All the above mentioned functions (Except Nozzles and Homogeneous Pressure Areas) are new to the v1.5. However, the TSHC v1.5 is backward compatible with the older TSHC version v1.0 as long as the later one has the older version of the TSHC engine installed (TSHC engine version 2.0 or older). At the very heart of the design system is an algorithm for calculating the pressures generated at the sprinkler heads and the heads’ discharge areas.
In some cases the pressure at the heads may be calculated according to a 15.1.1 Equation – Minimum Main Line Pressure. The calculation normally takes place using the standard 45 degree axis or 35 degree head axis.
The results window also calculates the effective sprinkler areas when using the 45 degree axis. This calculation is based on the main line pressure. The 45 degree area calculation may also be used to calculate the actual sprinkler head areas.
When using the 45 degree axis the appropriate equation to use for calculating the head area is found on the same page of the calculation results as the standard equation.
When the head axis is not 45 degrees the same method is used except that the head axis is substituted for the standard axis. The calculations are similar but the formulas are slightly different.
The output of the Simple Hydraulic Calculator is displayed on the calculation results page where the calculations are performed.
The Simple Hydraulic Calculator has several advanced features including:

System Configuration:
The input for the Simple Hydraulic Calculator is very simple. Pipe diameters must be entered, as are sprinkler/pump diameters and lengths.
Selection of the main zone model must be done first. The first of the nozzles/sprinklers and the associated main zone models will be selected by default but the user can change them if needed. The user can add or remove nozzles/sprinklers/pumps as needed. Once the main zone model is selected there is a pop-up list of all of the models of nozzles/sprinklers and pumps which can be added.
The pipe junction configurations are displayed on the second display (of three) once a model is selected. The junction type can be chosen from a list as well as a description. The junction is then shown on the main display and the flows are calculated.
